You must not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
What is wrong
- Driving while drunk or on drugs
- Driving a bus or hire vehicle with passengers while drunk is treated more seriously
What happens next
Police can test you, arrest you and produce you before the Magistrate's Court.
The punishment
- Fine of Rs. 25,000 to 30,000
- and/or up to 3 months in prison
- Licence suspended for up to 12 months
- Passenger vehicles: up to 6 months in prison and licence cancelled
- Higher penalties for repeat offences
What you can do
- You have the right to be told why you are arrested and to be taken before a Magistrate, normally within 24 hours.
- Get a lawyer before the court date. Legal Aid can help if you cannot afford one.
