If your vehicle is in an accident causing injury or damage, you must stop, help the injured and report it immediately to the nearest police station.
What is wrong
- Driving away without stopping (hit and run)
- Not reporting the accident to the police
- Causing death or injury by rash or negligent driving
What happens next
Police record the accident and may arrest the driver if someone is badly hurt or killed.
The punishment
Depends on the result: fines, licence suspension or cancellation, and prison under the Penal Code for causing death by negligence. Penalties are much higher if alcohol was involved.
What you can do
- Stop, switch on hazard lights and call 1990 (Suwa Seriya ambulance) or 119 if anyone is hurt.
- Report to the nearest police station and get a copy of the entry for insurance.
- Inform your insurer quickly.
- Do not admit fault in writing before getting advice. Get a lawyer if you are charged.
