A pawnbroker needs a licence from the Divisional Secretary and must give you a pawn ticket. Pledges stay redeemable until they are lawfully sold.
What is wrong
- Pawnbroker with no licence
- No pawn ticket, or a ticket missing details
- Selling your item without the notice the law requires
- Not paying you the surplus after an auction
What you can do
- Pawn only at a bank or a licensed pawnbroker
- Keep the ticket safe; it proves your right to redeem
- Note the redemption date and pay interest on time
- Watch for the auction notice and redeem before the sale
- If the ticket is lost, tell the pawnbroker in writing at once
- Ask for the auction account and any surplus
