Scales and weights used in trade must be verified and stamped by the Measurement Units, Standards and Services Department.
What is wrong
- Using an unstamped or tampered scale
- Using false weights or measures
- Packaged goods with less than the stated weight
- Packs not marked in metric units
What happens next
Inspectors can test scales and weigh goods. Police (Sub-Inspector and above) and price control officers can also check.
The punishment
A fine and/or imprisonment set by the Act; unstamped or false weights can be seized.

- Re-weigh the item on another scale if possible
- Look for the verification stamp on the scale
- Keep the bill and the package
- Report to the Measurement Units, Standards and Services Department or the CAA
