Every woman is entitled to women's rights under the Women's Empowerment Act. The National Commission on Women can inquire into violations and gender-based violence.
What is wrong
- Unequal treatment because you are a woman
- Unequal pay for work of equal value
- Harassment or violence because of gender
- An authority ignoring a woman's complaint
What happens next
- A committee is appointed within one month to inquire
- Both you and the other side are heard
- The Commission may send the matter to mediation, which should end within 60 days
- You are told the decision within 14 days
The punishment
The Commission can recommend remedies or prosecution and grant relief. Ignoring its summons or decisions is contempt, punished by the Supreme Court.

- Complain to the Commission within one month of the incident or of learning of it
- Someone can complain on your behalf
- Gender-based violence can also go to the Ombuds for Women's Rights
- Appeal to the Court of Appeal within one month of the decision
- In danger, call 119 or the 1938 Women's Helpline
