Complaint against a doctor or hospital

Open the interactive flowchartThe rule
Doctors must be registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council and act ethically. Private hospitals must be registered.
What is wrong
- Serious negligence in treatment
- Treating without proper consent
- Improper behaviour with a patient
- Practising without registration
- Running an unregistered private hospital or clinic
What happens next
SLMC's Preliminary Proceedings Committee hears both sides. If needed, a Professional Conduct Inquiry follows.
The punishment
- SLMC can suspend the doctor or remove them from the register
- An unregistered private hospital: fines, and the court can order closure
- Compensation for negligence needs a separate court case
What you can do
- Get copies of your medical records, bills and prescriptions
- Write to the hospital director first and keep a copy
- Send SLMC a letter to the Registrar with a sworn affidavit naming the doctor
- For private hospital standards, complain to the Private Health Services Regulatory Council
- For compensation, see a lawyer about a District Court case
