You want to adopt a child

Open the interactive flowchartThe rule
Adoption needs a court order. The adopter must be at least 25 and at least 21 years older than the child.
What is wrong
- Paying or receiving money for a child without court approval
- Taking a child informally without a court order
- Adopting without the parents' consent where it is needed
- Using adoption to traffic or exploit a child
What happens next
The court checks consents and the child's welfare and wishes, usually with a probation officer's report, before making the order.
The punishment
Unapproved payments for adoption are offences under the Ordinance. Child trafficking is a serious Penal Code crime.
What you can do
- Contact the Probation and Child Care Services office
- Married couples can apply jointly; one spouse needs the other's consent
- A child over 10 must also consent
- After the order, the child is treated as your own child
- A single man adopting a girl needs special circumstances
Where to get justice
Department of Probation and Child Care Services (provincial office) and the court that hears adoption cases.
