Sex with a girl under 16 is rape even if she agreed. Any sexual abuse or exploitation of a child is a grave crime.
What is wrong
- Sexual touching or acts with a child
- Procuring a child for sex or allowing it on premises
- Making or sharing sexual images of children
- Abuse by a family member (incest)
What happens next
Police record the complaint and a Judicial Medical Officer examines the child. Serious cases are tried in the High Court.

- Grave sexual abuse of a child under 18: 10 to 20 years plus compensation
- Sexual exploitation of children: 5 to 20 years
- Incest: 7 to 20 years
- Obscene publications of children: 2 to 10 years

- Make sure the child is safe first
- Call 1929 or go to the police
- Do not wash clothes or bathe the child before medical checks if possible
- Keep messages, photos or other evidence
- The child's identity must be kept private
